Maurice Sendak, the legendary children’s author, artist & illustrator, passed away this morning. He wrote one of my favorite stories Where the Wild Things Are, and spoke with Terry Gross on NPR earlier this year. It’s a touching interview about his relationship with his brother and some of the darker themes present in his work. RIP.
We’re going to focus on tech stuff this week and nothing is bigger than Facebook’s upcoming IPO. It’s got some investors split on the sustainability on a company that offers no discernible products.
And then there’s the recent reports that social readers are not driving the same amount of traffic as in the past. This can’t be that surprising seeing as how the interface muddled users’ Facebook feeds. I’m still pissed about the ill conceived timeline upgrade that does nothing to help business.
It’s DERBY WEEK! Heyo! This is the one week of the year where I love to talk horses. Let’s start right here in Illinois where we love our horses like we love our corruption. That’s where a public servant, who doubles as a horse trainer, stole over 50 million from taxpayers.
Moving right along, there’s my favorite horse of all-time Secretariat, (even spell check recognizes his might). His domination of the Triple Crown begins with the 1973 Kentucky Derby. Recall that Secretariat was dead last in that race until he unleashed a marvel that still stands to this day: Secretariat ran each quarter mile faster than the one before it. Or put another way: Secretariat was still accelerating at the finish line after a mile and a quarter sprint. And just for perspective, Sham, the second place loser, still set a track record that day even in second place. Secretariat still owns the Churchill Downs track record from that race despite being dead for over 20 years.
And then there’s Secretariat’s legendary performance at the Preakness Stakes. In that race, he again hung around out back before the announcer calls out, “But here comes Secretariat! He’s moving fast! And he’s going for the outside! He’s going for the lead! And it’s right now that he’s looking for it!”
Secretariat finally sealed the Triple Crown by completely flogging his competition at the Belmont Stakes by over 31 lengths. “He’s moving like an incredible machine!” screamed the announcer.” I’ll say. He shattered a quarter mile record by over 2 seconds. And judging by his merchandise, he’s pretty much an immortal revenue stream for his handler’s estate.
Meet the 92 year old bootlegger who has dared Hollywood to come after him. And God bless him.
